Public advice and control institutions

The main objective of SKAT (the Danish Central Customs and Tax Administration) is to levy government taxes and duties. The income is used for upholding the Danish welfare society. SKAT is the no. 1 public institution when it comes to interfering in a business owner´s day-to-day operations.
SKAT controls approx. 400,000 companies and 4.6 million citizens. They make sure that all citizens´ and companies´ contributions are precise - not overtaxing nor undertaxing.
Regarding business owners SKAT administers:
Business owner taxation
SKAT must collect taxes and control that the business owner pays tax relative to the company´s earnings
Corporate taxation
For limited companies - private as well as public - SKAT collect the tax and controls that it is based on a correct tax assessment
VAT
SKAT must collect VAT and control that a company settles its VAT payable on time
Import/export taxation
SKAT must control and provide consultancy services to all imports and exports paper work.
Employees taxation
SKAT collect and control that a company settles employees taxation.
Additional duties
Excise duties, green taxes, etc. are also collected and controlled by SKATControl
SKAT assume that a company assesses and settles its own duties according to Danish law. Being a business owner you are liable for knowing what kind of duties your company is subject to and when such duties are due for settlement. You have to find out by yourself what kind of obligations your company has to the Danish central government.
SKAT may exercise unannounced visits any time. Thus, it is important to alway keep your accounts up to date. If your accounts are updated you probably has nothing to fear from such a visit.
Supportive staf
SKAT is staffed with very supportive troubleshooters. They know very well that it is hard keeping control of all the rules for which reason they offer their assistance to specific problems.
If SKAT discover that you are hiding information and intend to evade, they will immediately impose a fine.
