Start-up step by step
|
When starting a shop or a restaurant it is often costly to furnish the premises and build up stocks. Thus, good sales figures are crucial.
There are no fixed guidelines on how to start up and run a shop or a restaurant. For that there are far too many unknown factors such as type of shop or restaurant, competitors, location, timing and not least the entrepreneur himself/herself.
Premises Many people start a shop because they discover vacant premises. Maybe you have found just the right spot for a café, the perfect located kids wear shop or a restaurant ready to take over. You feel inclined to rent the room right away and kick off your entrepreneur dreams. A lease also constitutes great economic risk.
Will it pay off? If you are too focused on the premises, location, arrangement, rent, etc. you risk forgetting the business aspects of running a shop.
The most important business aspects are:
- What is it exactly that I sell?
- Who are my customers?
- How many are there?
- How do I approach them?
- How much do they want to buy from me?
If you start a clothing or applied arts shop, a pizzeria or a sports café without having gotten most of the above 5 aspects straight, you do yourself a disservice. Then your dream clouds reality – and it may turn out to be a very costly dream.
Plan Ahead Before starting out and rent premises you should plan ahead how you want to run your shop or restaurant.
You can make plans based on specific premises you have in mind. Should the premises become occupied while working on your business plans it does not matter, you will always be able to find alternative premises. The knowledge and experience you have built up using the first location to envision your shop or restaurant come in handy next time an attractive room pops up.
