 Networks

- Dansk version         Print
When starting up independently it is important to be fully aware of the persons surrounding you and to know who you can go to for help and assistance in any given situation. Or put differently – to constantly observe for possibilities in the relations you make.

What is a Network?
You can divide your network into two:

  • The professional
  • The personal
Obviously, there may be an overlap as some of the customers or partners you encounter eventually turn out to become your friends. Nor is it uncommon to see family and friends give a hand in your company from time to time.

Generally, however, it is a good idea to keep the two networks divided as family and friends are not impartial. Therefore, such individuals are more likely to show consideration for you than a professional consultant would do.
Thus, if it comes to the worst such good and well-intentioned advice could damage your business.

Both types of network are crucial to independent business owners. Customers are important, not least in terms of economy, and it is no fun running a business without the support of your family and friends.

Professional Network
A professional network could be your banker, customers, suppliers, partners, trade fair attendants, etc.
A professional network is characterized by relationships to people you meet through work. Below are some suggestions for improvement of your professional network:
  • Register at relevant seminars and expositions – keep up to date on any such activities
  • Take part in experience exchange groups, expert pools, etc.
  • Use the the social medieas
  • Keep tracking down new projects with new partners
  • By the way – when was your last time at a business course?
Personal Network
A personal network consists of family, friends and acquaintances, neighbours, ex-colleagues, etc.
A personal network is not tied together because of work, in such networks people hang out to have a good time and exchange personal experiences. Obviously, this is not to say that you cannot discuss work here – maybe you will even find potential customers within your personal network.
Suggestions for improvement of your personal network:
  • Call friends and family on a regular basis – even just to say hello
  • Accept invitations – even if you may not have the time and energy
  • Cultivate your hobbies and interests – this will help you unwind
  • Join a non-work related club or association
  • Invite your friends over for a cozy get-together
Let people know who you are
It is important to cultivate your network, and all members of a network must be aware of who you are and what kind of product your company provides. If they are not aware of this, your name is not the one to pop up when they suddenly need the kind of service or product you sell.
Therefore, you must make sure that everybody in your network has your business card, that everybody knows your website address and knows exactly what your company deals in.
