No such thing as a standard definition of a freelancer exists, but one could be:
Freelancers are personalities with competences and know-how for sale

Working solo
Furthermore, a freelancer has chosen autonomy – i.e. he/she does not want employees in his/her freelance enterprise. This is probably the main difference between a freelancer and an entrepreneur. The entrepreneur does not mind employing staff.

Below, we have listed some characteristics of a person working as a freelancer:

A freelancer

  • carries out work for successive employers

  • does not usually sell time – only results

  • work carried out on fixed terms

  • seeks assignments

  • works independently

  • in different teams and with successive persons

  • is either a pay earner (employed or unemployed) or self-employed in terms of taxation

  • Working alone is working with successive persons on multiple projects
A freelancer may organise as:
  • freelance pay earner – with different employments in different companies

  • freelance pay earner/unemployed with sideline is mainly a pay earner who has gotten his/her unemployment insurance fund’s permission to run a part time business.

  • Issues invoices to his/her customers

  • freelance sole trader – only issues invoices, is not in receipt of unemployment benefits
A freelancer must consider:
  • a personal freelance scheme

  • a personal market survey

  • concept development and innovation

  • Applied IT

  • professional networks

  • tax, VAT, and insurance

  • determination of status: pay earner or self-employed?

  • framework of life as a freelancer: work from home or outside home?

  • efficient administration and accounts

  • targeted marketing

  • pricing and conclusion of agreements

  • cold calling of services
Typical Work Fields
Independent and flexible work methods spread throughout all trades and sectors these years. There are no educational limits to which occupational groups are capable of offering satisfactory work within these frames. Some work fields:
