"Entrepreneurship - do I have it in me , all my life I have been an employee?"
There may be various reasons why people want to start business. From inner urge to pit oneself against one’s own abilities as an entrepreneur, over a wish to make a lot of money, to a between-jobs-situation with no prospect of decent employment.
However, surveys show that approx. half of the native Danes starting business do so with independence as primary drive and only a fraction do so to improve their standard of living.
Entrepreneurs of a non-Danish origin often start because it is their only way out of unemployment.
Personality Almost all people are potential entrepreneurs, and among entrepreneurs you will find all types of personalities.
If you were to gather all the “right” properties in one person, thus creating the perfect entrepreneur with the personal drive needed for success in Danish business life, the below properties would be on the want list:
- Focused on achievement – i.e. you pursue your aims
- Risk-taking – i.e. you dare giving up things such as your vacation house, your work, or savings.
- Self confident – you believe in what you initiate.
- Persevering – even if sales are non-existent for the first months you keep struggling for your first order.
- Contact maker – being a sole trader you must always be on the lookout for persons who might be interested in your service or product
- Innovative – if you do not adapt to new trends in your surroundings it is difficult to do business in an ever changing world
Few born business men It is, however, important to emphasise, that few start business because they are “born business men” and cannot help it. Most start by coincidence and turn out to be diligent entrepreneurs after all.
